Moorish-style cubist architecture characterizes the town of Ohlão. From 1810 onwards, white and colorful dwellings replaced the old fishermen's huts. The açoteias, where fish used to be dried, with their ceramic balustrades and narrow, steep staircases, have now become beautiful terraces where you can eat and enjoy the sun.
It's a labyrinth of cobbled streets where you can lose yourself and admire the old azulejo facades, ancient doors and beautiful sculptures. Its famous "Nossa Senhorá do Rosário" church reminds us of Napoleon's defeat.
MERCADO DE OLHAO
Housed in 2 original early 20th-century Eiffel-style halls on the Ria Formosa. Its red brick walls and 2 domes give it a unique style.
A pure marvel where you can relax on the terraces of the bars that surround it, contemplating the sea.
THE MUST-HAVES
THE ISLANDS
The islands of Culatra, Armona and Farol are easy to reach with regular ferries, and the superb white sandy beaches form a barrier between the sea and the Ria Formosa.
VEGETABLE AND FISH MARKETS
There's an abundance of good produce in the two magnificent halls, with a wide variety of fresh fish and shellfish in one, and fruit, vegetables and cold meats from the Alentejo in the other.
And on Saturday mornings, the large outdoor market attracts people from all over the Algarve and takes on a festive athmosphere.
LA RIA FORMOSA
The Ria Formosa Natural Park is a 60km stretch of islands, lagoons, canals and sandbanks on the Algarve coast. For lovers of flora, fauna, walking and fishing, this protected area is ideal!
